Ignition Group lends a hand at a Made For More disabled surfing competition

In 2018, The Laureus Sport for Good Foundation South Africa and Ignition Group proudly announced their newly finalised partnership with Sport For Good. As one of our corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives, we assist Laureus to make lives better through sport. Since then, we have also been involved with several of Laureus’s partners who focus on specific projects and community upliftment through sport.

Made For More is one of these partners, focusing on a range of therapies, camps and programmes for disabled individuals. Julia Van Zyl, founder and director of Made For More, began the foundation because she recognised that sports was a way to inspire hope and foster connections, while at the same time teaching morals and values. Made For More has facilitated all of this, and also provides athletes with opportunities to grow their careers both provincially and nationally.

Our Ignition volunteers rallied together at North Beach in Durban to help a group of talented and determined surfers have some fun and challenge their peers in this riveting championship. The sunny Durban weather did not disappoint, and everyone had the opportunity to surf, socialise and spend some time on the beach. It was gratifying to see these individuals with disabilities doing what they’re passionate about, and it made for a memorable day!

The event ran from sunrise to sunset, and Ignitioners even joined in to surf with a range of other sponsors and attendees. Our Ignition volunteers hit the beach to help out with setup, catering and assisting the surfers in and out of the water. The 4-hour shifts were full of energy and hard work, but it was so rewarding to share in the joy and laughter between athletes and helpers, and it was a real privilege to watch the intense competition between these talented athletes in person.

As the day wrapped up, we celebrated winners from different parts of the country, but we have to give a special shoutout to the accomplished athletes from our home province of KZN. We’re so proud of these star athletes! Their hard work and determination landed them championship titles and bragging rights for the year ahead.

We would also like to thank each and every one of our Ignitioners who volunteered their time and made this event a success. At Ignition, we believe our people are our greatest assets and this is evident by the impact they have not only at the workplace but also through their enthusiastic involvement in our various community initiatives.

Partnering with Laureus and Made For More was a highlight of the year and we look forward to many more fulfilling initiatives in future.
