From book corners in classrooms to full libraries buzzing with activity, our journey with The Learn Project and LIV Village has shown us just how powerful access to knowledge can be. Each shelf of books, each device and each story has been a step towards a brighter, more connected future for learners.
This year, we’re embarking on our biggest project yet, and a milestone for The Learn Project itself: the launch of its first ever Senior Library, right here at LIV Village outside Durban.
Past projects
- Windy Heights Primary School, Umlazi: In June 2023, we worked with The Learn Project to officially launch 19 book corners (one for every foundation phase classroom), stocked with 1 440 books, cosy cushions and rugs. Later we expanded the project to completely renovate and restock the library, including the installation of a digital library which launched in February 2025.
- Eskhululiwe Primary School, Inanda: On Mandela Day 2023, Ignition volunteers installed 13 foundation-phase book corners, a key step in nurturing literacy in the local community. We then installed a full library as well as a digital library in 2024.
- Sogidi Primary School, Ndwedwe: On Valentine’s Day 2024, we launched five new book corners and a full library with over 1 400 books, supplemented by training for teachers and librarians to ensure the learners get the most out of it.
The new Senior Library at LIV Village
With this latest initiative, we’re creating a space where learners can not only discover books but also gain the digital skills they’ll need to succeed in a connected world. The Senior Library will feature:
- Books chosen by LIV teachers, who shared their dream book lists to ensure every title inspires and supports their learners.
- Personal involvement from the school librarian, who will accompany The Learn Project team to shop for these books and help shape the space.
- A digital library with iPads loaded with educational apps for reading, maths, coding and more.
- Broadband connectivity, tech support, and device insurance to make sure the space is reliable and sustainable.
Samantha Botha, our Head of Group Marketing, reflects: “We believe that by supporting literacy and reading programmes at less privileged schools from foundation phase up, learners get the base they need to successfully participate in and benefit from a formal education. We have introduced the digital libraries to ensure that these students aren’t left out of this increasingly important part of life, helping them to develop the skills they need to integrate into the digital economy.”
Ros Toerien from The Learn Project also adds: “The digital libraries are such a powerful addition to the library resources. The learners get access to information and learn new skills that will benefit them in everything they do in the future, and technology makes all of this possible”.
With Ignition’s continued support and The Learn Project’s dedication, communities will be empowered to keep learning and growing.
