Ignition Group’s Chief Human Resources Officer Vicky Koekemoer has a vision: to cultivate a generation of leaders who not only drive business success but also leave a lasting, positive impact on people and communities. To achieve this, Ignition is changing the way it approaches leadership, prioritising purpose and service as well as excellence.

People speak of someone having ‘leadership qualities’, and while that’s true, we believe that great leaders aren’t born – they’re built through experience, growth and a commitment to serving others. It was with this in mind that the Ignition Management Development Programme (IMDP) was created, for middle managers looking to improve their leadership skills.

This six-month initiative isn’t just about leadership theories – it’s about action, impact and leaving a legacy. While the IMDP is currently empowering a select group of leaders at Ignition Group, the principles behind it can help you level up your own leadership journey, no matter where you are.

1. Lead with purpose and service

A key focus of the IMDP is the philosophy that great leaders serve their teams first. Inspired by Simon Sinek’s Leaders Eat Last, the programme teaches that true leadership isn’t about authority – it’s about creating an environment where others can thrive. At Ignition Group, our people-centric culture ensures employees feel empowered, thrive in their roles and are driven to succeed.

What you can do:

  • Make time for your team. Regular one-on-one check-ins can help you understand their challenges and aspirations.
  • Shift your mindset from managing to mentoring. Instead of directing, ask, “How can I support you?”
  • Celebrate team wins. Recognising effort builds motivation and a culture of success.

2. Put leadership into action

One of the standout modules of the IMDP is Servant Leadership. Participants partnered with LIV Village, an orphanage dedicated to providing love and care for vulnerable children, to get their hands dirty – literally. They tilled soil, harvested crops and built resources that would benefit the community. The takeaway? Leadership is about showing up and making a tangible impact.

What you can do:

  • Volunteer. Giving back teaches empathy, teamwork and problem-solving in ways that no classroom can.
  • Get involved beyond your job description. Seek out opportunities to contribute outside of your day-to-day role.
  • Lead by example. If you want a team that’s engaged, show them what commitment looks like.

3. Empower growth through development

Leadership isn’t a destination; it’s a journey. The IMDP challenges participants to refine their skills, shift their perspective and embrace lifelong learning. At Ignition Group, we empower employees and future talent through career growth and development. We also uplift communities by investing in initiatives that create a meaningful and lasting impact where it’s needed most.

What you can do:

  • Read leadership books and listen to podcasts that challenge your thinking.
  • Seek mentorship. Learning from someone more experienced can fast-track your growth.
  • Step outside your comfort zone. Take on new challenges that push your limits and build resilience.

4. Build a legacy

At its core, leadership is about making a difference that lasts beyond your time at a company. The IMDP aims to create leaders who drive business success but also leave a positive impact on people and communities.

What you can do:

  • Think long-term. What impact do you want to have on your team and organisation?
  • Share your knowledge. Developing future leaders is one of the best legacies you can leave.
  • Be intentional. Every decision you make shapes your leadership legacy – so lead with purpose.

You don’t need to be part of a formal programme to start your own transformation. By taking initiative, serving your team, putting leadership into practice and committing to continuous growth, you can become the kind of leader who inspires, empowers and makes a lasting difference.
